World renowned trauma specialist Mooli Lahad presents ways of assessing and cultivating coping resources.

The post Resilience in the Face of Trauma first appeared on Therapy Education Online.

This is a seminar with world-renown trauma specialist Professor Mooli Lahad on the ‘Basic PH’ model and the ‘Six-Part Story’ method as a means to enable resilience and coping when working with traumatised clients in therapy.

Despite the dramatic effect of trauma and crisis on the human psyche and body, it is known that most people recover from traumatic experiences on their own accord. But do we know how these people manage to recover?

What are the therapeutic benefits of studying and focusing on the client’s resources rather than solely on their difficulties and pathology?

For almost 40 years now, Professor Mooli Lahad has studied the concept of resilience and how to assess it in the therapeutic dialogue as well as how to develop a therapeutic plan for the client based on their strengths.

Professor Lahad’s model of coping and resiliency, known as the ‘Basic PH’ model, was developed in the early 80’s and has been known and studied in many research and intervention projects worldwide. It was the first model to specifically describe resilience and coping as an on-going effort to manage life challenges. The model has been used widely in the aftermath of national and international disasters such as in the USA after the September 11th attacks, and the tsunamis in Sri Lanka (2004) and Japan (2011-14).

This seminar will focus on the theory and practice of assessing the coping resources of individuals as a gateway to therapy and as a guide to strengthening each client’s coping resources. The Psycho-linguistic methods Professor Lahad employs help the therapist be attuned to their clients’ resilience and coping as well as to their inner story.

We will be introduced to the practice of Six-Part Story Making [6PSM], a method developed by Professor Lahad, which allows client and therapist to work metaphorically with the client’s traumatic narrative. It is a method that will help the therapist to learn how to extract and understand the coping styles of their client, how to understand the client’s basic assumptions about the world and the main questions they are preoccupied with, and how therapist and client can plan the treatment therapy based on this “map”.

Following this seminar participants will:

– Know the BASIC PH model
– Be able to assess the BASIC PH using active listening method.
– Be able to use the 6PSM method and analyse at least 3 levels.
– Plan the intervention based on resources.

This video explores therapist self-care as an integral part of trauma work from a relational field perspective.

This video is part of our Trauma Masterclass series. To purchase the series in full, please click HERE.

Trauma impacts us all at some point in our lives. From the ‘everyday’ life trauma of loss and bereavement, to the tragic consequences of childhood sexual abuse, sudden adult trauma, and the effects of immediate, emotional and/or physical traumatic experiences. It is rare for the impacts of trauma to not be felt within the consulting room.

In this presentation we look at trauma from a relational field perspective. The message is about the necessity for therapist self-care – it is not a luxury but an integral part of the work. The presentation focuses on the resources available to the therapist and how we can increase our resilience to more comfortably bear witness without either dissociating or being pulled into trauma contagion.

Two simple concepts drawn from neuroscience research will be reconceptualised to help us consider the relationship in trauma therapy. Reference is made to the therapist’s own relationship to trauma, and Miriam also thinks about the ways in which we as individuals get pulled into helping.

Because trauma is fundamentally experienced in the body, of particular importance for both therapist and client are body-based resources related to safety, grounding and resilience, and attention is given to how we can use these. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their range of resources and how they might develop them further, and on the gains of the work which might include mutual healing.

Trainer Feedback

“Excellent. Very informative. I expected the best and the[training] has been more than this. Miriam is so knowledgeable and shares this in a very accessible way”

“It’s rare to find trauma training of this calibre within the profession.”

“Full, informative, guiding and clarifying with some good ideas for supporting traumatised clients that I can use in my practice. I felt the trainer’s ability to focus on all the parts of the dissociating client were extremely grounding and demonstrated safety in practice.”

“Very useful and well delivered. It met my expectations, I really enjoyed it. Miriam Taylor was very experienced, calm, and knowledgeable.”

“Miriam communicated clearly with obvious depth of experience and helpful examples and role play. A good solid training.”

“Thought provoking, expressive, interesting.”

Polyvagal Theory is one of the most exciting therapeutic discoveries of the last 20 years and has the potential to change the the way that therapists practice.

This is a training workshop designed especially for counsellors and therapists who would like to deepen their understanding and application of Polyvagal Theory within the therapeutic relationship. In relation to the autonomic nervous system, Polyvagal Theory outlines 3 hierarchical subsystems, which evolved to respond adaptively to environmental (including relational) features of safety, danger and life threat (Porges, 2011). Viewers will learn about peripersonal neurons (Graziano, 2018) monitoring the space around us, and how both client and therapist react non-consciously to a variety of implicit relational cues which can stimulate behavioural responses through neuroception.

The workshop will invite exploration of concepts such as self /interactive regulation, attunement and therapeutic presence. Viewers can engage with a range of interactive exercises which closely examine the social engagement system but also interactive barriers which contribute to enactments and other ruptures within the relational field.

The overall emphasis is on repair and the implicit establishment of greater levels of safety within the therapeutic relationship. Therapists will learn a range of practical skills for enhancing relationships with clients in the service of therapeutic goals.

We all have a body and we all have a relationship with that body. Our sense of self, including any embodied shame, impacts on this relationship; both on the felt physicality of the body and the perception of how it looks.

In this presentation we consider how and why shame impacts on human identity and can come to be pinned onto the physical appearance; and the distress this can cause. We explore the developmental and neurobiological underpinnings of shame and identity formation and consider how mindfulness-based practices can support the journey through experiences of appearance-focused distress.

This workshop will be an opportunity to explore the power of playfulness and imagination as healing powers of the mind. There will be times, such as during national CoVid lockdowns and other traumatic experiences, that the mind is probably the only space where we can transcend to a better future using playfulness and imagination.

We will focus on the use of metaphors, therapeutic-cards, images, music & movement. We will learn how using some or all of these methods can help those clients who have experienced trauma or are going through very difficult times by engaging the creative centres of the brain and mind to aid healing.

Very few studies have fully explored the right hemisphere of the brain as a source of healing. The right hemisphere has so often been discarded as the “non-logical” part of our mind. While our imagination can be a source for pain, stress, and anxiety, it is also a very neglected healing tool that has been used throughout human history as a means to ease trauma, and which is now used extensively as a therapeutic tool with children. In this workshop we will explore what creative tools can be harnessed for use in therapy with adults who have experienced trauma, grief or loss.

We will re-embrace George Bernard Shaw’s statement that “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” or we will reiterate homeopathy by saying: If Imagination is the cause of pain Imagination should be the cure, using the concept of “same cures same”.

Please note that any mention in the videos about “handouts” or “printouts” by trainers, are in reference to printouts of the PowerPoint slides, which were made available to delegates who attended the LIVE workshop. These slides are included within the videos and are the property of the trainers. They are not available for download or redistribution with any video rental purchase.

The post The Healing Power of Imagination in Impossible Situations first appeared on Therapy Education Online.
